Using RISR to Scale Centralized Planning and Enable Advisor-Led Business Owner Conversations

Wealth Management & Financial Planning
Challenge
Abigale Shields, VP of Advice & Strategy, leads a centralized planning team supporting advisors who work with business owners. While the firm had strong personal planning capabilities, it lacked a consistent system to evaluate business value, guide succession discussions, or equip advisors to confidently engage in business planning. The team needed a framework to standardize their process and enable more advanced planning conversations.
Results
By integrating RISR into their centralized planning workflow, Abigale’s team established a repeatable system for evaluating business owner clients, equipped advisors with clear, structured deliverables, and enabled more consistent engagement in succession, exit, and protection planning conversations—unlocking opportunities that previously were not being pursued.
“What RISR gave us was structure. We now have a clear process and a deliverable that helps advisors step into conversations they weren’t having before, and do it with confidence.”

About Baystate & The Team
Baystate Financial is a Boston-based wealth management firm serving individuals, families, and business owners. It offers investment, retirement, insurance, and succession planning through a hybrid advisor model supported by centralized expertise, with a focus on long-term, coordinated financial strategies.
Abigale Shields leads Baystate's centralized planning team that supports advisors with insights, opportunity identification, and strategies to deepen business owner relationships.
The Challenge
Abigale’s team regularly supports advisors who work with business owners, but historically, those engagements were limited to personal financial planning. While advisors had strong client relationships, they often lacked the tools and confidence to expand into business planning discussions.
In many cases, advisors were aware of opportunities related to succession, exit strategy, and risk management, but did not have a structured way to quantify or communicate them. As a result, conversations remained surface-level or were deferred entirely.
From the centralized team’s perspective, several challenges became clear: there was no consistent system to evaluate or quantify business value, advisors lacked confidence engaging in business planning discussions, and planning outputs were inconsistent and difficult to standardize across cases.
Without a defined process, the team was often relying on assumptions or best estimates when incorporating business value into broader financial planning.
The Solution
Abigale’s team implemented RISR as a core component of their centralized planning workflow, using it to standardize how they assess, analyze, and communicate business owner planning opportunities.
The platform provided a structured framework that aligned directly with their internal planning process. Through RISR’s fact finder, the team was able to identify key members of the client’s advisory team, highlight gaps in areas such as legal, tax, and succession planning, and capture critical inputs needed for business valuation and risk assessment.
From there, RISR enabled the team to move into a more defined evaluation phase, producing clear valuation outputs, benchmarking data, and insights that could be directly incorporated into client planning. This created a consistent, repeatable workflow.
RISR also provided a tangible deliverable that advisors could use in client conversations. Instead of relying on internal expertise alone, the team could equip advisors with structured insights, allowing them to confidently engage in discussions around succession, exit strategy, and protection planning.
The Results
RISR has fundamentally changed how Abigale’s team delivers value to both advisors and clients. For advisors, this meant the ability to have more meaningful and informed conversations with clients, without needing deep prior expertise in business planning. For Abigale's team, it provided a system that allows them to consistently produce high-quality insights and support a broader advisor base.
Across the centralized planning function, the platform has:
Standardized how business owner cases are evaluated and presented
Enabled advisors to engage in business planning conversations with greater confidence
Expanded the scope of planning from personal-only to integrated business and personal strategy
Unlocked conversations around succession, exit, and risk that were previously not being addressed
Created a repeatable, scalable process for supporting business owner clients
